Immunizations Q&A

What are immunizations?

Immunization is a process by which a person becomes protected against a disease through vaccination. This term is often used interchangeably with vaccination. There are three main types:

Inactivated vaccines

These include vaccines for polio, hepatitis A, rabies vaccines, influenza, pneumococcal vaccines, toxoids (diphtheria and tetanus toxoid), recombinant vaccines (hepatitis B), human papillomavirus [HPV], and influenza.

Live-attenuated vaccines

Live-attenuated viral vaccines are routinely recommended in the United States. Examples include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella combined), varicella, rotavirus, and influenza (intranasal).

Messenger RNA (mRNA)

These include Cytomegalovirus (CMV), flu, rabies, and Zika Virus vaccines.

Due to age, health conditions (like asthma), known allergies, or other factors, some people should not get certain immunizations or wait a period before getting them.

What are the most common immunizations?

Immunizations are often recommended by disease:

  • Flu (Influenza)
  • Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
  • Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
  • Meningococcal
  • Pneumococcal
  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
  • Dengue
  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Tetanus (Lockjaw)
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

For example, your child’s school may require immunizations.

People in specific research jobs and travel situations might be exposed to dangerous or deadly diseases that are no longer common in the United States. Due to the increased risk of disease exposure in these instances, certain vaccines are required or recommended.

If you are traveling outside the USA, your doctor can recommend necessary vaccinations for the region and ensure your current ones are up to date.

Why are immunizations necessary?

Immunizations are an essential part of preventive and primary care. They help protect against serious illnesses such as mumps, measles, rubella, polio, and hepatitis. Staying current on your immunizations is critical to protect yourself and the people around you.

Preventive care involves taking steps to prevent illness or disease before it occurs. This can include regular check-ups, immunizations, healthy lifestyle choices, and screenings for pre-diabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure, or cancer.

By taking care of your health and addressing potential health issues early on, you can help prevent serious health problems.
